The Business of Entertainment on CapeTalk with Martin Myers every Thursday, 9pm exclusive interview with the band Shakatak

The Business of Entertainment on CapeTalk, hosted by Martin Myers every Thursday at 9pm, has landed a real coup with this exclusive one-on-one.

We speak to Shakatak on Thursday 12th October at 9pm. We chat to key band members Jill Saward (lead vocals), Bill Sharpe (keys).

The band has firmly established itself as a vibrant live act, combining astute musicianship with a sense of fun that translates perfectly with audiences worldwide to this day.

Shakatak  comprising Jill Saward (lead vocals), Bill Sharpe (keys), Keith Winter (guitar), George Anderson (bass) and Roger Odell (drums), are on a world tour and have  a new  Album  coming out 27th October 2023   – Called โ€œEyes of the World”

Shakatak have enjoyed a level of success, and career longevity rarely paralleled in contemporary music โ€“ but then Shakatak is a particularly unusual group.

Due to the nature of their music, their fanbase is far-reaching while always retaining an โ€˜underground elementโ€™. This paradox sees the band, known primarily as serious jazz/funk musicians, enjoying high โ€˜cultโ€™ status and instant recognition as a much-loved household favourite.

Shakatak scored several major hits, โ€œNight Birdsโ€ (1982) and โ€œDown on the Streetโ€ (1984), plus a further 12 entries in the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles.

The group is still active, selling out tours, particularly in Japan and the Far East, and commonly produces a new album every two years on JVC Records.

Hosted by Music Exchange founder Martin Myers, this weekly half-hour segment delivers powerful insights into the minds and careers of award-winning creatives, with a strong focus on the business side of the creative industry.

Each episode is a candid, focused conversation between Myers and a creative in the music, theatre, design, sports or media marketing space.

Myers says the conversations are always focused on being entertaining and inspirational, peppered with true stories, first-person accounts, and invaluable tips from the people whoโ€™ve made a successful living from their craft.

โ€œWe bring key executives and trailblazers (previous guests have included Dr. Trevor Jones โ€“ global film composer, Marc Marot โ€“ former Managing Director of Island Records and Jason Grishkoff โ€“ founder of SubmitHub) onto the station to delve into every aspect of their entertainment business reality.

โ€œWe will ultimately unpack what it takes to make a living in this space,โ€ says Myers.

CapeTalk Station Manager Tessa van Staden says CapeTalk is passionate about supporting creatives. โ€œArtists, musicians, sculptors, performers, directors and authors hold a mirror to society to reflect who and what we are,โ€ says Van Staden.

โ€œThey play one of the most difficult and important functions, often without the necessary backing and resources. This segment always shares practical tips for those starting in the industry. The โ€˜Business of Entertainmentโ€™ hopes to inspire our audience while championing those who have paved a way in the sector,โ€ she concludes.

For all the business insights you canโ€™t google, donโ€™t miss the โ€˜Business of Entertainmentโ€™ every Thursday at 21:00.
