Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse

Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse, born in Soweto in 1951, is one of South Africa’s most influential musicians. A master of multiple instruments, he first gained recognition with The Beaters, later renamed Harari, a band that pioneered a fusion of soul, funk, and African rhythms in the 1970s. His solo career brought him widespread acclaim, especially with the 1984 hit “Burn Out,” which sold over half a million copies and helped introduce township pop to international audiences.

Mabuse’s career spans more than five decades, marked by collaborations with icons such as Miriam Makeba and Hugh Masekela, as well as his role in mentoring younger artists. He is admired not only for his music but also for his commitment to education, famously completing his matric at the age of 60. Honored with awards including the Order of Ikhamanga (Silver), he remains a symbol of resilience, creativity, and cultural pride in South Africa.
