A show about flying on the wings of music, weaving different stories through Songs and their interpretation.

Songbirds with MYNIE GROVÉ, KIM KALLIE & Jaconell Mouton on keyboards.

Between the girls on stage they cover beginnings, genres, life stages and picking up where they paused, continuing to speak in a language that is universal and understood by all.

Its a sweet journey with a singer-songwriter, a stage musical star and an arranger/producer, combining and celebrating each talent.

I chatted at length with Mynie Grové ahead of the show, enjoy the read.

What is your purpose?

To live the best version of the breath I am given and everything that came with it.

What does music mean to you?

Music is simply part of my DNA since birth – hearing, doing, creating, enjoying.

My music is about…

Music is about expressing a moment, sometimes inconveniently, but needful and therapeutic.

What is your motto?

A late-learned lesson: be who YOU are. The Bee Gees wrote a song with this title and I sang it in the Ken Kirsten TV extravaganza The Bee Gees Songbook.

 Fame is about…

Fame makes you revel in admiration for which a price is paid – some people need it, others unlearn it.

Retirement will happen when…

There is no such thing as retirement from music – it is a lifelong condition. When you have music written and/or recorded, it is immortality without trying.

 I don’t do…

Oh. There were many “I don’ts” regarding music growing up. Still exists, but I have a much more mature attitude and inclusivity with music & voices I never regarded. But I still battle with any “oompaloompa’ cultural habits in all languages!

I would love to co-write with…

This is something I hardly aspire to. But the late Johan Laas and I “got’ each other because there was no ego involved for either. It was an incredible magical moment where the one thing flowed into the other in words, melody and song structure….our eyes shone and our mouths smiled and we both recognized that it was so!

Where do you go for inspiration to create?

Nowhere. And everywhere. I simply explore a thought through silence and expressing what it makes me feel.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of your work?

Being challenged and doing the necessary to meet it.

The song you must do during every show?

I used to succumb to that when I was still active as a recording artist. Now that I am separated from being told what to do, it doesn’t apply in the least.

Any funny moments on stage?

LOL. Too many, but always sound system related. Falling over monitors behind me, the band not getting a mic feed and continuing playing the intro way into the song, unsecured mic stands….

 My heroes are…

So many. Quincy Jones. Prince. Rod Templeton. The Beatles.  Sarah Vaughan. Andy Williams. Chaka Khan. Melissa Manchester. Bonnie Raitt. Dolly Parton. Frank Sinatra. Endless…. Great producers, instrumentalists and voices. And interpreters.

My style icon is…

Classic and avant garde: Fashion, Architecture, Art…

Which living person do you admire most and why?

Anyone who stands for humanity and loudly so.

What is your most treasured possession?

Besides being caretaker of my children, the legacy that I leave them with, and all dogs and cats, Sanity & my continued learning for Clarity and Truth.

It’s your round; what are you drinking?

Wine. White. Slightly fruity. Chilled.

Dream gig to do?

Done dreaming about gigs. Just doing.

What makes you stand out?

I am both verbal in standing up for what I believe in, protecting those that need it, helping people see their own potential. And being extremely quiet when there is too much ‘noise’.As an artist I see myself as interpreter and storyteller. And an easily recognizable vocal timbre – no one sounds like me.

Any nicknames?

 Groovy. Ms. Grove (not Grové).

Schooldays: Veldmuis, Sprinkaan and Colgate.

If you were not a musician, what would you do?

Architecture. Creating spaces to maximise life and energy…its mesmerizing.

Pick five words to describe yourself?

 Warm. Accessible. Insightful. Empath. No-B

Greatest Movie Ever Made?

Blade Runner (1st one). Many others, but this is always a go-to.

What book are you reading?

I have a list of must-reads that I still have to acquire. Don’t do digital.

What song changed your life?

Too many………but a movie did: American in Paris…ja, I’ve lived that long!

Who do you love?

My boys and my furries and a string of the very goodest friends, cousins and in-laws.

What is your favourite Word?

 Verkuckte – Yiddish

Top of your bucket list?

 I have a Fukkit-I-MUST-Do-That List.

And that is: Finish my damn reno.

Your greatest achievement?

Staying upright in the SA Music Business!

What do you complain about most often?

  Finishing my reno.

What is your biggest fear?

I pursue solutions and face problems like a Bison in a storm.

Happiness is…

Knowing I am in charge of it.

On stage, I tend to…

Be succinct. Do what’s needed with passion, authentically, & then get off.

The best life lesson you have learned?

You cannot control everything – especially those that try to control me, nice try! Still learning.

What has been your favorite journey so far?

Discovering that my journey has been extraordinary and will continue to be so!

Do you do charity work, and if you do – what do you do?

I do what feels right, sometimes in the moment, but I don’t take pics and don’t share it on socmed.

 Wishes and dreams?

Simply to be the best I can be at any given moment.

More about  Mynie Grové:

Long, long ago a little farmgirl was given a piano at age 3 and proceeded to live in her own world playing by ear and making up music every day.

Piano lessons started at age 6 when she learnt to read music to discover its intricacies, structure and therapeutic energy.

Much later, through a chance meeting with German Composer/Producer Klaus Netzle aka Claude Larson, she entered the International Music Industry when he filmed her on Signal Hill at a rosewood babygrand piano, singing her own composition, ‘As long as we’re together’.

Shortly after he immigrated to SA and started the Vocal Group ‘The Claude Larson Singers’, introducing Mynie to a world of hard work, dedication and skill.

This experience is what formed the basis for her as the Singer-Songwriter-Composer, TV Personality, Publisher, Producer, Music Business Activist, Business Developer, Mentor and Coach, Mynie Grové.

Her daily grind consisted of recording session work as jingle singer, back-up singer, and composing and writing for artists, movies, and TV series whenever there was an opportunity.

She became popular with TV audiences of all persuasions through a myriad of TV performances, music series and specials.

She is proud to have been selected for the very 1st multi-racial TV advert, Mobil’s ‘YOU ARE NO.1’, singing in English, Zulu, Sotho and Afrikaans.

In the early 80’s she was also the 1st to end up briefly on the funky Radio5 Top10 with an Afrikaans ‘Disco’ song ‘Middernagsensasie’. Although she acted in 3 movies and 3 TV series, it was always going to be music calling her back time after time.

She represented SA 3 x in International Music Festivals, in Chile, South America and Poland. And shows across continents with superstars like GLORIA ESTEFAN, ANDY GIBB, ALISON MOYET, ERASURE, JOSE FELICIANO, OMD, and many other 80/90’s stars.

Her ad hoc ‘AMAGROOVE YOUTH CHOIR’ performed with Josh Groban and Diana Ross and toured SA with Michael Bublè in 2007.

Giving an opportunity to Cape Town’s magnificent undiscovered voices, representative of our rainbow nation, they were introduced to the discipline and incredible power of connection and collaboration.

Mynie pushed boundaries, including indigenous languages in her own music, even Jazz, Hiphop and R&B in Afrikaans.

She is an industrious talent and comes with a conscience. The business of ‘EMPOWERING EXPECTATION’ is what makes her DNA dance.

Although having stepped away from the daily grind of the music business economy, she maintains a firm grip on her role in it, its developments, and changes tack as the wind dictates.

She remains a cheerleader for colleagues and especially for those who are dreaming of a world of possibilities she is lucky enough to have grown up in
