Rene Johnson: “Kindness is Timeless” – and That’s Exactly What Soul Sisters 2026 is All About

There are singers with powerful voices, and then there are artists whose greatest gift is making people feel seen.

That is what Rene Johnson has been doing throughout her career, and it is one of the many reasons audiences continue to embrace her whenever she steps onto a stage.

On Saturday, 3 October 2026, Johnson joins an outstanding cast of South African female vocalists for Soul Sisters 2026 at the Grand Arena, GrandWest, in what promises to be one of Cape Town’s biggest musical celebrations of the year.

The annual concert has become a highlight on the city’s entertainment calendar, bringing together some of the country’s finest voices for an evening of soul, nostalgia, inspiration and world-class live music.

This year’s show features Salomé, Claire Phillips, Rene Johnson, Leonie le Roux  and many more stunning acts , backed by a full live band, promising audiences an unforgettable night of timeless classics and spectacular performances.

Tickets are already on sale from R195 through Ticketmaster.

Spend just a few minutes talking to Rene Johnson and you quickly realise that music is only part of her story.

When asked what her purpose in life is, her answer comes instantly.

“My purpose is to love and care for people. That’s everyone’s purpose.”

It is a philosophy that runs through everything she does.

Her greatest inspiration comes from life itself.

“I get my inspiration from experience and life, so I’m always operating in creative energy.”

Whether she is performing before thousands or speaking to someone after a concert, connection matters most.

“Engaging and connecting with people. Being the light.”

Those simple words probably explain why her performances resonate with audiences across generations.

Johnson believes that “Kindness is timeless,” a statement that feels increasingly relevant in today’s world. Asked what she would change if given the opportunity, her response is equally straightforward.

“Ugliness. Be lekker.”

It is classic Rene—honest, warm and refreshingly uncomplicated.

Family remains the centre of her world.

She describes becoming a mother as the defining moment of her life, says her children are her greatest motivation and names her own mother as her biggest hero. Her spiritual journey has also shaped who she has become, with her faith and service to others remaining central to her life.

“I serve at my church, and we do various outreach missions. I also provide food and care for some people. We don’t let our left hand know what our right hand is doing.”

That quiet commitment to serving others speaks volumes about the woman behind the microphone.

Musically, her influences are wonderfully diverse, ranging from Paula AbdulJanet Jackson and Gwen Stefani to the timeless sounds of TotoEarth, Wind & FireChristopher Cross and contemporary worship music.

And then there is Valerie.

Even when she doesn’t plan to sing it, audiences always ask for it.

“Someone always requests it.”

That relationship between performer and audience is exactly what makes Soul Sisters so special.

Every singer brings her own personality, journey and catalogue of songs, creating a concert that celebrates not just incredible voices, but remarkable women who have each carved out their own place in South African music.

Presented in partnership with Smile FMCape ArgusDaily Voice and GrandWest, Soul Sisters has established itself as one of Cape Town’s premier live music events, drawing audiences who appreciate authentic musicianship and outstanding vocal performances.

Rene Johnson still has dreams she is chasing. She hopes to own a beautiful home and return to Italy one day.

“I’m going to.”

Given her determination, few would bet against her.

Before then, however, Cape Town audiences have the opportunity to experience her live alongside some of South Africa’s finest female performers.

If you love exceptional singing, timeless songs and an evening that celebrates the very best of local talent, this is one concert you should not miss.
